The Stanley Victor No. 20 Compass Plane (also known as a circular plane) is a 10-inch long hand plane featuring an adjustable flexible sole that contours to plane both convex and concave surfaces. The “Type 1” represents the earliest production generation of this model under the Victor line.
The #20 circular plane was acquired from Leonards Bailey’s sale of his Victor plane patents and tools in stock in 1884. Stanley’s model Type 1 has Edmunds Schades’s 2/7/1893 patent date cast into the frame and his 4/19/1892 patent on the cutter. Earlier models will have the model number cast in script lettering on the adjustment knob. Of all the circular planes manufactured by Stanley Rule & Level Company, this is the sturdiest and the model often recommended as the most usable of the circular planes.
This specific tool is in excellent original unrestored condition. Operates, functions, & works flawlessly. I’ve been unable to find another in as beautiful condition as this one anywhere online. Please send me some pics if you happen to have one. Id truly like to see and admire them. it really is a beautiful looking plane.
Key Details & Identification:
- Production Period: The Type 1 was produced from 1897 to 1907. The “Victor” name itself originates from Leonard Bailey; Stanley acquired his Victor patents in 1884 and continued producing the No. 20 under the Victor banner for decades.Â
- Finish & Plating: True to its earliest design period, a Type 1 model will traditionally feature full nickel plating rather than the later Japaned paint finish, which Stanley transitioned to around 1919.Â
- Sole Mechanism: It features a steel sole that can be precisely adjusted using a large threaded thumbscrew to accommodate curves. This allows you to smoothly refine and fair bandsawn curves on hardwoods with excellent precision.Â
- Value & Rarity: Authentic Type 1 Victor No. 20 models in excellent, pitting-free condition often command a premium among collectors and traditional woodworkers.
