The Stanley No. 71 Type 12 is a historic open-throat router plane manufactured between 1942 and 1945 during World War II. Because of wartime resource shortages, it features a unique, utilitarian configuration that sets it apart from earlier and later models.Â
Key Identification Features
- Wartime Finish: The body has a black japanned (painted) finish instead of the typical shiny nickel plating.
- Base Markings: The markings “No. 71” and “MADE IN U.S.A.” are cast directly onto the top of the base.
- Cutters: Accommodates standard grooved cutters to prevent blade slippage.
- Design Equivalence: Aside from the lack of plating, its mechanical features and dimensions are identical to the pre-war Type 11.Â
