The Stanley No. 10 Carriage Maker’s Rabbet Plane (like the highly coveted Type 8 produced between 1899–1902) is a unique hybrid. It features an open-sided body for cutting rabbets and squaring cheeks alongside the heavy-duty iron and adjustable mouth typical of a jack plane.Â
Type 8 production (characterized by the “B” casting mark and specific blade stamps) is highly collectible among woodworkers. Unlike standard bench planes, the No. 10 features a thin-walled side that allows the 2 1/8-inch iron to cut flush against shoulders. Because of its open side, tuning the frog and securing the lateral adjustments requires careful setup so the blade cuts evenly.Â
The primary differences in the No. 10 lineup of that era include:
- Stanley No. 10: The base model featuring a standard tote and front knob.
- Stanley No. 10 1/2: Introduced later, this model features an adjustable mouth and an aluminum tilt-handle for improved grip during deep rabbeting tasks.Â
Vintage Type 8 versions of these carriage planes in good to excellent condition typically range from $150 to $400+ depending on the completeness of the original parts (like the rosewood knob/tote and original logo irons).
From all appearances this plane appears to be fantastic condition. It has the original blade, tote, handle etc which are all in excellent condition. Unfortunately while cleaning and restoring this plane I noticed two fine cracks on the body of the plane located on each side at the cheeks. If you look closely at the last pic you can make out the faint outline of the crack. At this stage the plane still works and functions without any issues. Im sure someone out there with metal work skills can figure out a way to fix the crack. That is not something I d0 as part of my restoration process.
The remaining original parts which all continue to be in very good condition are the redeeming qualities of this plane, and therefor the plane has been priced accordingly.
