The General Tools S-98-6 is a 6-piece telescoping (or “snap”) gauge set used by machinists and mechanics to measure the precise inside diameters or widths of bores, slots, and holes. The six individual gauges in the set combine to provide an overall measuring range of 5/16″ to 6″.
How the S-98-6 Works
Telescoping gauges do not have a direct numerical readout. Instead, they feature spring-loaded plungers that expand to fill the exact size of an internal hole.Â

- Insert and Compress: Compress the plungers and insert the gauge into the bore or hole.
- Lock the Plungers: Once the plungers expand to touch the walls of the bore, lightly tighten the knurled locking screw on the handle.
- Measure: Remove the gauge and use a calibrated micrometer to measure the exact distance between the expanded plunger ends.Â
