This 4 1/2 plane is heavy, strong, & sturdy. The japanning is about 75% intact. Everything functions, moves, and operates as designed. The handle & tote remain firm & secure. Apart from a small piece missing from the back left hand side of the horn, the handle and tote are in really good condition. This beast will definitely continue to be an amazing user for many many more years to come.
The Stanley No. 4 1/2 Type 9 is a vintage wide-bodied smoothing plane produced between 1902 and 1907. It is highly prized by woodworkers for its “jumbo” width—measuring 10 1/4 inches long with a 2 3/8 inch wide cutter—offering a great balance between coverage and maneuverability.Â
Because it was manufactured during a transition period, a genuine Type 9 possesses a very specific set of features that distinguish it from earlier and later models:Â
-
- Two Patent Dates: The iron bed behind the frog has two patent dates cast into it: MAR-25-02 and AUG-19-02.
- Frog Design: The Type 9 is the last model to lack the frog adjustment screw behind the frog (a feature introduced in the Type 10).
- Lever Cap: The “Sweetheart” logo was not yet introduced, so the lever cap typically features either a Bailey logo or no markings.
- Wood & Japan: Original examples feature beautiful Brazilian rosewood handles and knobs, along with the distinct black Japan enameling on the cast iron body.Â
