The Stanley No. 605 Bedrock (Type 5) is a highly coveted, premium 14-inch jack plane manufactured around 1910-1911. The “C” designation means it features a corrugated sole, which reduces friction and prevents the plane from suctioning onto timber.Â
Key Features of the Type 5 Bedrock:
- “Flat Top” Design: This type marked the transition where the rounded cheeks were milled flat, permanently separating the Bedrock line visually from the standard Stanley Bailey models.Â
- Triple-Screw Frog: It utilizes a three-screw frog adjustment mechanism. This ingenious design allows you to adjust the frog’s position and tighten the mouth to prevent blade chatter without needing to remove the iron.Â
- Mating Surface: The frog has a solid, continuous seating on the body, providing incredible rigidity.
- Patents: Features the 1895 and 1910 patent dates stamped behind the frog.
- Components: Typically sports a 2-inch “T” logo cutter, deep, rich cherry or rosewood handles (tote and knob), and the iconic “Bed Rock” stamped lever cap.Â
Because of their durability and precision, Type 5 Bedrock planes are heavily sought after by woodworkers who prefer them over standard vintage planes for flattening and stock removal.Â
