The Stanley No. 72 Type 2 Chamfer Plane is a sought-after vintage woodworking tool manufactured between 1886 and 1904. Featuring a 45-degree angled sole that straddles the corner of a board, it includes interchangeable bullnose and regular toes to produce consistent chamfers.Â
Key Features and Identification
-
- Patent Date: The iron is stamped with the April 21, 1885 patent date.
- Trademark: Features the early “J” logo or arched trademark.
- Wood: The plane includes a flawless rosewood handle (tote) and front knob.
- Attachments: While the base No. 72 cuts chamfers, it can be fitted with the No. 72 1/2 beading attachment, which uses scratch blades to create decorative moldings along the chamfer.
Usage and Value
The grooved sled is placed against the corner of the wood to shape a uniform 45-degree angle. The depth of the cut is controlled by adjusting how far the blade projects past the mouth. Because it is no longer in production, antique models are relatively rare.

This plane is in excellent condition. Japanning 99% intact. Steel is clean and blemish free. Blade is original to the plane and J logo is easily identifiable. Handle & tote remain intact and issue free. All moving parts do so freely and smoothly. Incredible to believe this plane is close to 130 years old. So far its one of the cleanest examples Ive been able to find so far.
